Day 154: “Not just for keeping dry”
Aside from getting enough light into the scene yesterday, I was also having a lot of trouble with shadows.  So this morning I conducted a little experiment with different bounces and diffusers to see what would work the best.  I have been seriously underestimating the effectiveness of the umbrella.  During my tests, even when the flash was shot at 1:1 power, there were very little shadows in the scene, and the shadows that were there were quite dim and soft.
Monday I’m spending pretty much the whole day at the new place trying to figure out better shooting techniques.  Hopefully I get a lot closer to really nailing this down.

Day 153: “Lights, please.”
I hate moving.
I’ve moved something like 20 or more times in my life.  And the shittiest part of it all is that it’s been only within Maui.  I haven’t even had the pleasure of moving to a different place.  A better place.  It’s just been Wailuku to Kihei to Kahului to Kihei to…  The only places I haven’t lived yet are Lahaina and Hana.
However, this time I’m using the move to my advantage.  I’ve been dying to work on my interior photography skills (correction; dying to gain some interior skills) but haven’t really had the chance to do so.  Since we’ll essentially have about a month to move from our current place to our new one, I’ll have some time to get a few sample shots.
The shot for today was basically me getting frustrated at one point because I couldn’t get enough light to illuminate the scene, so I decided to fire the flash at full power to see if that would finally work.
Well…it’s illuminated.

Day 152: “The Moment it Clicks”
My sister got me this book for Christmas last year.  I’ve only recently gotten around to reading it.  So far, it’s quite interesting.  It’s not like a manual or instructional book.  Actually, it’s more like a “photographer motivational self-help” kind of book.  Honestly, I kind of felt it a little pretentious.  It’s basically this one photographer going through his life’s work and commenting on how or why he got there.  But after really looking at the words, it comes off a lot more helpful than I first decided it to be.  I’m actually getting quite excited to see what the next image is, and the story behind it.  And there are actually some pretty useful tips, here and there.
The messy sidetable is Dawn’s fault.

Day 151: “Nifty Fifties”
New lens for the A-1; a Canon 50mm f/1.4 FD.  It’s a friggin’ sharp lens.  And it looks damn sexy on the camera.
Of course, seeing as I haven’t used it at all this year, I decided to use my EF 50mm f/1.8 to shoot this image.  It just felt right, even with such a cheap lens on such an impressive camera.

Day 150: “Johnny B’s”
Today was quite interesting.
Edlom rented a 45mm tilt-shift lens and let me try it out for a bit.  So I decided to go to Giggle Hill to shoot the Cook Pines.  I also figured that we should bring Gus along because it seems as if he really enjoys the true outdoors.  Dawn today made the observation that Gus isn’t really a “park dog.”  When we take him there, he usually plays around for a little bit, but then just sits or lays somewhere for the rest of our stay.  When he’s out in nature, he’s like a kid in a candy store.
So we went.  Made the half hour drive out to go shoot some tress with a lens I had never used before and didn’t really get the chance to learn before using.  And it rained.  Not heavily, but enough to make me decide to head back before my gear got damaged.  I wasn’t too concerned about my camera, but the TS-E isn’t weather sealed and I didn’t feel like paying money to replace a damaged lens.
I didn’t get any shots at all.  I snapped a few, but they were all less than mediocre.  Anyway, Gus had a lot of fun and that’s what made it for me.  But on the way out of Paia, we stopped at this burger place Dawn spotted on the way in. It’s called Johnny B’s and apparently they’ve only been open for three months.
They easily had what I’m sure was the best burger I’ve ever had on Maui.  It was tender, juicy…the lettuce was crisp, the tomato perfectly moist…and the fries were seasoned just right.  We also had a couple of shakes which were just thick enough - not runny and not like liquid concrete.  Plus the staff was extra nice.  The guy who took our orders even brought Gus a Milkbone.
I want to make this place a regular spot for me.  At least once or twice a month.

Day 149: “The predator strikes!”

Earlier this month we went to my sister’s new place and took Gus with us so he could chase some chickens around.  They were a little bashful that time.  But this time, there were a couple brave souls who decided to step out.  Gus had a blast.  Once he saw the chickens, he took right off after them and chased them all over the yard.  Eventually they made their way behind some trees up on a hill behind the house.  The rooster came flying out from the trees and over this short wall, and Gus followed.

As you can see in the other images, he wasn’t quite as graceful in his landing as the chicken was.  I call the other two images “HOLY SHIT!!!” and “Wipeout”, respectively.  Gus was fine, by the way.  His landing, I think, just looks more painful than it was.  After he crashed, he got right up and continued bolting after the chicken.

This is the second time I’ve found it difficult to decide between several shots for my picture of the day.  I think we need to go out to my sister’s place more often.  Both times I’ve managed to grab other shots that I think will make great images.  I’ll just have to re-shoot them to be in compliance with the object of P.366.  So at least I know I’ve got other days covered.

Day 148: “I’d rather be sick”
For over two weeks now, my life has been a living hell.  Congestion, runny nose…I have a hard time breathing every now and then…my asthma has kicked up because of all this…I wake up feeling tired as hell…  My doctor says it’s allergies.  At least if I were sick, it would go away eventually.
I’ve tried everything I can think of.  The only thing I haven’t used yet is this sample of Nasonex my doctor gave me.  But listen to this shit:
“The most common side effects include headache, viral infection, sore throat, nosebleeds and coughing.”
Yeah…”most common.”  Of course, there’s also…
Infections of the nose and throat may occur.
NASONEX may cause slow wound healing.
Some people may have eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts.
NASONEX may cause immune system problems that can increase your risk of getting infections.
A condition in which the adrenal glands do not make enough steroid hormones may occur. Symptoms can include tiredness, weakness, nausea, vomiting and low blood pressure.
But my nose will be clear, right?

There’s just something so satisfying about shooting with film.  When you get your negatives back and see the exact image you wanted…that feeling right there.  Digital is great, and I would never desire to go back to using film exclusively, but it just doesn’t provide the same experience.
I really hope film never goes away.
